DETACHED YOUTH SUPPORT PROGRAM
What is Detached Work?
Detached work is about engaging young people right where they're at, in the places where they choose to "hang out", be it on the streets, in a park and in open shared public spaces, to provide informal social education. The autonomy and freedom from physical buildings gives flexibility in order to meet the changing needs of young people. Detached work offers young people the opportunity to explore a variety of social issues, discover and develop interests and build life skills for the future.
Why Detached Work?
For over 20 years we have been creating "JAC TEAMS" made up of a variety of individuals, to deliver detached work in local neighbourhoods. Why? Because simply put, it works! It seeks out those young people who choose not to access centre-based youth services and offers alternative positive activities that they enjoy and value. Typically, detached workers engage with youth on Fridays and Saturdays evenings in areas within their neighbourhoods. Visits are made to those areas regularly to build positive relationships with youth.
